Bringing your whole self to work is even more prominent when working from home. From shared office space with your husband, to kids waving and demanding lunch mid video call, to gate crashing pets who walk across your screen or bark in the background, to your appearance, your outfit or even the room you are sitting in… you are now forced to bring your whole self into the office environment, regardless of whether you are comfortable with that or not.
For the more private among us who are trying to rigidly stop the kids from entering the room whilst you are working, constantly apologising for the gate-crashers, not turning on the video calls, and just doing audio or blurring the background I would say do what makes you comfortable but don’t be afraid to try changing the status quo one thing at a time as you get more and more comfortable with the working arrangements. I for one want to meet your kids, see your home and ultimately understand my colleagues a bit better to foster closer relationships in a world that is more distanced than it has ever been.
